Welcome to After the Whistle from City Mix. The Capitals opened their season with a 5–2 win at Carolina on Friday, October 2, and Alex Tuch made his Washington debut count: two goals in the opening period. A new jersey, a quick introduction, and a three-goal lead before the first intermission.

Tuch opened the scoring at 6:33 after Pierre-Luc Dubois forced a turnover behind the Hurricanes’ net. Cole Hutson added Washington’s second at 11:33. Tuch then supplied his second at 14:23, finishing a puck that had worked through Carolina goaltender Brandon Bussi.

Jakob Chychrun’s power-play goal early in the second made it 4–0. When Sebastian Aho pulled one back, Ryan Leonard answered eight seconds later. Carolina eventually cut the score to 5–2, but Washington’s early advantage held.

Logan Thompson finished with 31 saves. The Capitals also killed five of Carolina’s six power plays. That combination—an aggressive start, a rapid response after conceding, and a productive penalty kill—gave Washington a winning opening night. That’s After the Whistle: the final score and the moments behind it.
