Black storytelling gets a DC screen-and-style chapter

ABFF’s DC program connected film, a local filmmaker and the history of image-making.

ABFF announced its first DC Pop Up for September 25–27 at Angelika Pop-Up in Union Market. Its program included The Heir, directed by DC filmmaker Tia A. Smith, and Black Is Beautiful: The Kwame Brathwaite Story, directed by Yemi Bamiro.

The pairing opens two conversations: a Washington-set story of inheritance and neighborhood change, and a documentary about a photographer’s cultural legacy. The latter also belongs in Style, where image-making shapes how beauty is discussed. A film’s cast or documentary appearances do not establish a festival guest list, and a Washington setting does not by itself date a local shoot.
