Hollywood in the DMV: Laurel builds its next stage

A planned virtual-production facility puts Maryland’s film ambitions behind an LED wall.

The Hollywood-in-the-DMV story is not only about who steps out of a trailer. It is also about where the next production could work. WTOP’s May 28 report described a warehouse in Laurel being converted into a film and television facility, with co-founder Zach Guerra and County Executive Aisha Braveboy discussing its ambitions. At that event, Guerra projected an October opening. That was a target, not confirmation of an opening.

The company’s official site names co-founders Zachary Guerra and Daniel Strauch and lists 13380 Mid Atlantic Boulevard, Laurel. Its advertised equipment includes a 156-by-26-foot LED volumetric wall with ceiling and a 20-by-40-foot cyclorama. It also describes wardrobe, hair-and-makeup facilities and production, pre-production, event and training services. These are company specifications, not City Mix’s inspection of a completed studio.

Virtual production uses a digital environment around a physical set. The May report described camera movement and the displayed background working together, allowing filmmakers to create different settings within the stage. For a region accustomed to serving as an outdoor location, the editorial significance is a potential reason for productions to stay and do more work locally.

Prince George’s County Economic Development Corporation’s June 3 follow-up described possible opportunities for local hospitality, catering, transportation, technical services and emerging creative workers. It also reported exploration of a Bowie State University partnership. Those are development ambitions, not verified hiring totals, booked Hollywood projects or a completed university agreement.

Earlier company promotional material mentioned August 2026; the dated May report gave October. We retain the May announcement’s target and do not declare the studio open without a verified opening record.
